BHS 2020 Annual Gathering at Reserve Run

We had 3 teams of 3 each:

Mark Rapport

Dave Brenner

Harry Wilson ( A friend of Bud Frazier)

Don Bartlett

Bill DeCicco

Myron Mondora

Lloyd Murray

Dean Murray

Bud Frazier

Mark Rappaport's team of Dave Brenner and Harry Wilson won the scramble with 9 under par. The Murray Brothers team that included Bud Frazier was second at 6 under while the Bartlett, DeCicco, Mondora team, which honestly counted every stroke, was 6 over.

Lloyd won the closest to the pin and with his winnings generously bought the first round of drinks at the 19th hole.

Eleven met at Another Round at Reserve Run for the 19th hole including all the golfers except Myron, Bud's wife and her sister (Canfield grads) and Georgia Murray (Dean's wife).

DeCicco was going to take a photo of the group but all 12 were never present at the same time. Actually on the 17th hole Myron mentioned Ed Istnick and Bill was traumatized for the rest of the day with a flashback of Istnick giving him a lowly 75 in his Algebra II class and told Bill he would "never amount to anything."

2019 Golf Committee

BHS 59 Golfing Events

The following is a listing of four (4) BHS 59 golfing events planned for the summer of 2019. Each will be preceded by a breakfast and followed by a "19th" hole.

Regarding the July 26-27 golfing events a couple of very informal gatherings associated with our 60th class reunion that weekend are in the planning stage. More details as to those activities will follow in the days ahead both via the BHS Classmates Google Group and on the class website www.bhs59.com.

Also specific information for each golfing event will be provided by the respective hosts approximately three weeks prior to the actual date.

In the meantime please note the dates below on your calendars:

2019 BHS 59 GOLF SCHEDULE

Friday, May 24th - Myron Mondora, host

Breakfast - 9:30 a.m. Bob Evans, Canfield

Golf (18 holes) - Kennsignton Golf Club, Canfield - www.kennsigntongolf.com

Tee Times (4) 11:20 a.m., 11:28 a.m., 11:36 a.m. and 11:44 a.m.

Perfect weather provided a fun day of golf for the 1st BHS Golf Outing of 2019.

Team one composed of Dick Selby, Mark Rappaport, Dave Brenner and Bud Fraiser were 6 under.

Team two, consisting of Lloyd Murray, brothers Dean and Al and nephew J.R. were also 6 under.

Team 3, included Don Bartlett, George Zokle and My were 5 over. However, team captain Don (Black Bart) is sending teams #1 & #2 scorecards to Price Waterhouse for auditing. Pending the outcome of the team # 1 and # 2 collusion investigation, the above results may change.

"Closet to The Pin" prizes were won by Lloyd Murray and Don Bartlett. The collusion investigation will not affect these prizes because they will probably be spent before the investigation is completed.

Missing from the photo: Don Samuels - BHS '59, Steve Stevenson - BHS '59, Dave Beede - BHS '59.

On June 5, 1959 217 members of the Boardman High School class of 1959 received their diploma's from Superintendent Irving J. Nisonger and Principal James W. Tidd at the brand new Auditorium atttached to the old high school located at 7410 Market Street which is now Boardman Center Middle School. Then Market Street was a three lane roadway and St. James Episcopal Church and Angie's were the only prominent structures on the other side of the street where the Southern Park Mall now stands. At that time the Boardman News, founded in 1947, was not yet a teenager.

On July 26, 2019 several members of BHS 59 and a few guests assembled once again some 60 years, 1 month and 21 days later to both celebrate and reminisce about their four years at Boardman High with four separate events: breakfast at Bob Evans, golf at Reserve Run, a 19th hole at Another Round at Reserve Run and an evening gathering at the Magic Tree.

At the morning breakfast, class president Don Samuels, now entering his 65th year in office, vowed to "keep Boardman great" and at a minimum retain some of the Boardman vestiges the class experienced growing up in the 1950s. However, Samuels was pessimistic about the return of four prominent class hangouts: Howard Johnson's, Shotts Restaurant, the Newport Theater and the Southside Drive-In.

Thirteen golfers (12 Boardman grads and one Ursuline grad) played in a scramble golf event at Reserve Run Golf Course. The golfing group was subdivided into four teams captained by Jack Haplea '59, former Boardman Superintendent and basketball coach Dick Selby '49, Lloyd Murray '59 and Bill DeCicco '59. Showing respect for Mr. Selby who taught 8th grade history to many of us he was permitted to recruit two younger "ringers" for his team golfing semi-pros Dave Brenner '63 and Mark Rappoport '63. Needless to say the Selby group was the victor with a score of 59 (perhaps an appropriate number for the day) 12 strokes under par.

The remaining three teams were not even close but had a few great golfing shots nonetheless. Team Haplea comprised of Tom Ziemainski '59 and Jim Jones '58 placed second with a score of three under par while team L. Murray made up of Myron Mondora '59, Dean Murray '60 and George Zokle (Ursuline '60) finished third. The DeCicco team which included Don Bartelmay '59 and Don Bartlett '59 ended up dead last at even par perhaps in part due to confusion about teeing off in alphabetical order.

As a consolation DeCicco won closest to the pin (about four feet) on hole #15 while Jones was the nearest to the pin on hole #2. Also "longest drive" prizes were awarded to Bartelmay (from Aiken, SC), Ziemainski (from Newark, DE) and Jones Elkhart, IN). And as always no one brings more pizzazz to BHS59 events than Ziemainski.

Several non-golfers joined the golfers and President Samuels for a 19th hole at Another Round at Reserve Run including: Bill Gordon (Rayen '46), Carol Bender Gordon '59, Sarah Schunn Bartelmay '62 and Steve Stevenson '59. And Dave Beede '59 eventually arrived, last but not least, for the Magic Tree gathering.

Several of those in attendence were also graduates of recently closed Market Street School. DeCicco noted that since relocating from Boardman to greater Cleveland 6 years ago that most Cuyahoga County communities have both senior and recreation centers.

Some discussion occurred that the Market Street School should be retrofitted, along with selected demolition, for those purposes as the building contains excellent administrative space, classrooms, a gymnasium and kitchen/cafeteria facilities along with ample parking and outdoor recreational space. It was further noted the acreage could become a focal point for "North" Boardman and also perhaps the site might help alleviate persistent flooding problems. Anyway it was agreed this proposal is something that township officials, the school board and various civic organizations should further explore.

Haplea who coordinated the outstanding 60th reunion activities reminded classmates and friends of classmates to mark on their calendars for the next BHS 59 event of 2019 the Selby Open to be held on Friday, August 23rd at The Links at Firestone (www.linksatfirestonefarms.com).

For those interested in particpating contact Dick Selby at rmsel6566@aol.com and/or Myron Mondora at mmondora@zoominternet.net. This event is open to all BHS graduates through the class of 1970 and their guests.

On Friday evening, we were pleased to have 50 classmates with guests from the classes of '58 & '59 attend our gathering at the Magic Tree Pub & Eatery. We enjoyed socializing in a private room where the food and service were great!

Everyone was on their own Saturday during the day, but I heard good reports of golfing, touring the old high school and “winning” at the Hollywood Gaming Casino in Austintown.

We had an exceptional evening with 70 of us at the Holiday Inn. The buffet dinner arranged by Jim Jones was delicious and featured pasta and meatballs, orange roughy and chicken piccata. Jim Jones did a"masterful" job as master of ceremonies. He introduced our faculty guests, Ed Lugibihl and Dick Selby, who welcomed us and remembered good past times at BHS with us. Jim introduced Don Samuels the class of '59 president and Jack Haplea. Jack was instrumental in encouraging the class of '59 to attend in order to give us the numbers necessary to hold this great event at the Holiday Inn. He then introduced Dave Allen who thanked his committee for all their help and hard work. The committee members were Ann Bagnell DeFrance, Weiker Kline, Marylou Devlin Stambaugh, Doris Martin Derrico, Grace Kerr McKenzie, and Judy Warner Elder.

On Sunday morning, classmates met for a farewell breakfast or brunch at the Holiday Inn and O'Charley's. There was some discussion about a gathering when we all turn 80!

 2018 BHS 59 Golf Schedule

Friday, June 15th @ 11:12 a.m., 11:20 a.m., 11:28 a.m. and 11 36 a.m. at Kennsington Golf Club -- Canfield, OH www.kennsingtongolf.com ($29.00 greens fee)

Breakfast at Bob Evans, Canfield at 9:30 a.m.

19th Hole at Kennsington Grille at 3:45 p.m.

Host: Myron Mondora

On an almost perfect day at Kennsington Golf Club in Canfield, OH www.kennsingtongolf.com the first BHS 59 golfing event of 2018, well organized and graciously hosted by Myron Mondora, is now history.  Twelve golfers (11 Boardman grads and one alien) played golf and president Don Samuels joined the group for breakfast at Bob Evans - Canfield and after for the 19th hole at the Kennsignton Grille where dozens of women were present ranging in age from 50 to 90 all claiming to have once dated Jack Haplea.

Upon the completion of his 62nd year in office, between pancakes at breakfast president Don pledged to do everything within his power to "make Boardman great again" and at least return it to the place we all experienced growing up in the 1950s.  Further after a couple of beers at the 19th hole Don vowed that neither Austintown Fitch nor Cardinal Mooney will ever have nuclear weaponry under his watch.

The golfing event was subdivided into three foursomes captained by Dick Selby '49, Lloyd Murray '59 and Don Bartlett '59.  Coach Selby was reprimanded for recruiting a much younger semi-pro team comprised of Dave Brenner '63, Mark Rappoport '63 and Jim Soller '65.  With these "ringers" the Selby team easily won the event with a score of 6 strokes under par for a 65.  Feeling guilty for his actions Dick issued lifetime "get out of detention free cards" to all those on the opposing teams.

The remaining two teams, Murray and Bartlett tied for second with identical scores of 1 over par or 72.  Team Murray included:  Myron '59, Dean Murray '60 and George Zokle  (Ursuline sometime in the early 1960s).  Team Bartlett consisted of Bill DeCicco '59, Pete Chick '61 and Debbie Chick '70.

The following special awards were made:  closest to the pin on #6 -,Dean Murray, closest to the pin on # 13 - Debbie Chick; and longest drive - Jim Soller (from Houston, TX).  Debbie "Deuce" Chick also made the play of the day scoring a birdie two on #13 with no assistance from her teammates.  Unfortunately no trophies were issued by Myron at awards ceremony which followed as he claimed he did not know Paul Morris Sports was permanently closed more than 50 years ago.

Mark you calendars now for the next two golfing events which will be held in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the Boardman Schools and the 60th reunion of the Class of 1958.  In the weeks ahead look for more information about our Friday, August 3rd outing at Reserve Run www.reserverungolf.com hosted by Brother Hap and Saturday, August 4th (9 holes only) again at Kennsington hosted by Lloyd. Word has it that Brother Z will be travelling from Delaware to attend both so be assured the August events will have lots of pizzazz as well as utterances of the b-word highlighted in bold blue print.

And don't forget to note the final premier event of the year the "Selbypollooza" on Thursday, September 13th at the Links at Firestone (www.linksatfirestonefarms.com).  Last year some 25 plus participated.

For additional information on the above, scroll down on this page.

Breakfast at Bob Evans, Boardman at 8:45 a.m.

19th Hole at Another Round at Reserve Run at  3:30 p.m.www.reserverungolf.com/restaurant  with all attendees invited to a BHS 58 gathering after at the Magic Tree, Boardman, OH

Host:  Jack Haplea

It was a perfect day for golf and was the beginning of an enjoyable weekend spending time and stories with classmates. I echo posted comments thanking the class of 1958 to allow surrounding classes to partake in their 60th celebration. Kudos again to Dave Allen, Jim Jones and their committee.

Thus, the results of the much anticipated Hap Open.

Team Lloyd & Dean Murray, Jim Jones and Bud Frazier finished on top of the field. They were then followed by team Ron & Mark Rappoport , Dave Brenner and Dick Selby's team Don & Sarah Bartelmay,Tom Ziemianski and Jack Haplea and team Myron Mondora, Ed Lugibhl and Pete & Debbie Chick.

Score cards were evidently misplaced or soaked by spilled beer.

Everyone received a valuable commemorative inscribed golf ball which, in time, will surely be a collector's item or just another Goodwill Industries item gathering dust.

Prizes for longest putt( Debbie Chick) longest drive ( Tom Ziemianski) and closest to the pin ( Dean Murray) each received yet another elusive commemorative golf ball.

Anyway, I believe everyone had a good time and look forward to Dick Selby's outing at Firestone Farms in September.

Saturday, August 4th @ 10:00 a.m., 10:08 a.m., and 10:16 a.m. at Kennsington Golf Club, Canfield, OH www.kennsingtongolf.com  This will be a 9 hole event.

Breakfast at Bob Evans, Canfield at 8:30 a.m.

"10th" hole at the Kennsington Grille at 1:00 p.m.

Host:  Lloyd Murray

We had more golf on Saturday after another Bob Evans breakfast, then 9 holes of golf at Kennsington followed by lunch on the patio.

The results of the golf were: (1) Ron & Mark Rappoport, Myron Mondora (2) Chuck MIller, Tom Ziemanski, Lloyd Murray (3) Don & Sara Bartlemay, Pete & Debbie Chick (who the class of 59 have adopted). The winners received, free drinks and bragging rights until the next time.

It was a great weekend and I thank and appreciate the classmates coming from out of town!

The 1st 2017 BHS Golf Outing was held Friday, June 16th. This was a makeup outing as the original date of May 25th was rained out.
The day started with a group breakfast @ Bob Evens Restaurant in Canfield, just minutes away from Kennsington Golf Club where the golfing event was held.
We had 13 golfers; Team #1 Ed Lughibl, Mark Rappaport and Dave Brenner. Team #2 "The Murray Clan Lloyd, Dean, Al & J.R. Murray. Team #3 Ron Chick & Ted Gavossi. Team # 4 Pet Chick, Debbie Chick, George Zokle and My.
Closet to the pin competition was won by Debbie Chick on hole # 8 and Ron Chick won on hole # 13. We're still examining video of Hole #13 to make sure Ron did not take "A Mulligan"because it was his Birthday.
And the 19th hole was on the large Kennsington porch, over looking the golf course. After a few brews, apparently too many brews, the team score cards disappeared. Therefore team scores cannot be publicized for this outing.

We had the largest turnout yet for a BHS Golf Outing. 28 PLAYERS!!!!! A new record.
I believe I have the correct facts as I was given them after "A Few" beers by someone, who shall remain anonymous, who also was partaking of several "Suds" himself!!!!!
We played something new, "Shamble", described on two type written pages by our Host, Dick Selby.
There were several of Dick's fellow BHS administrators and teachers who played. And, after a while, when everyone was "Loose"at The 19th Hole, I realized that this shamble thing may have been created w hen Dick and his peers told us they were "Working" so hard at BHS!!
AND, they tried to make our BHS Class of 1959 feel GUILTY of BEING PARTY ANIMALS!!! However, I promised to burn the tape of yesterday's 19th Hole candid conversations.
The winner of the day's Shamble Game was a repeat performance of 2016 by the stacked team of Murray, Murray, Murray & Murray who uses the young, J.R.Murray to carry their sorry butts.
The two "Closest to The Pin" winners were Doug McKay and J.R.Murray.
Our Host went all out, giving 4 gift certificates for Firestone G.C. to the winning team and prizes to closest to the pin winners. Each team was given 4 golf balls w/ Firestone G.C. logo & ball marker.
However, we had to buy our own beer and drinks and no Cart Girl was on the course!!!!

Golf Outing and Annual Gathering Schedule

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is the official 2016 schedule of BHS 59 golfing events, including the annual summer gathering.

Regarding the golf events, four foursomes have been reserved for each of six (6) outings with the first tee time noted below.  Most events will be preceded  by a breakfast and followed by a "19th hole."  Additional details for each event will be provided by the respective hosts approximately three weeks in advance of their occurrence.

The Annual Gathering will be held on Friday, July 15th, beginning approximately 3:00 p.m.,
at Another Round within Reserve Run.

Breakfast at Bob Evans -- Canfield @ 8:30 a.m.; 19th Hole @ Stonebridge Tavern on Rt 224 near golf course
Host:  Lloyd Murrary

19th Hole
On a nearly perfect beautiful sunny day (Thursday, July 14th), the team of Haplea, Ziemianski, Lugibihl and Mondora defeated, by one stroke, the group of Selby, Green and Murray at the classic Mill Creek (South) Donald Ross course. Cliff Green won the longest drive (about 600 miles) from Alton, Illinois. Mr. Lugibihl and Mr. Selby won the closest to the pin awards as did Dave Beede and Don Samuels (although the latter two might be considered suspicious) as they were only present for Breakfast and the 19th hole.

Friday, July 15th @ 9:28 a.m. -- Reserve Run -- Poland, OH   www.reserverungolf.com
Breakfast at Bob Evans -- Boardman @ 8:00 a.m.; No 19th Hole
Host:  Bill DeCicco

Brother Z

On a second consecutive nearly perfect day (Friday, July 15th), the team of DeCicco, Murray and Ziemianski, defeated (again by a single stroke) the foursome composed of Green, Lugibihl, Mondora and Selby. A spectacular shot, which landed 22 inches from the cup, by Brother Z on hole #8 at Reserve Run, made the difference.

Friday, July 15th @ approximately 3:00 p.m. until ??? -- Annual Summer Gathering (Another Round at Reserve Run), 625 East Western Reserve Road, Poland, OH)   www.reserverungolf.com/restaurant
Host:  Bill DeCicco
Immediately following was the Annual Gathering at Another Round at Reserve Run where we were again joined by Don Samuels and Dave Beede with Carol Bender Gordon finally giving our rather small but spirited group (some with faulty memories) respectability and class. One of the first orders of business (in this year of presidential elections) was to provide President Don with a reaffirmation of his presidency now in its 60th year. In accepting the accolade President Don orated "the Boardman class of 1959 has always been great and I'm going to make it even greater." The occasion was celebrated with at least 4 pitchers of Yuengling.

Wednesday, September 14th @ 10:00 a.m.  -- Boulder Creek  -- Streetsboro, OH  www.bouldercreekohio.com
Breakfast at Bob Evans Canfield @ 7:30 a.m. for "Boardman" group;  19th Hole @ Boulder Creek

         Host: Jack Haplea

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" but fortunately the best times FAR outweighed the worst ones -- which was the spotty weather.
Other than the 45 minutes or so of heavy rain which drove us indoors for needed nourishment, the merry band of 59ers pictured below had a good time golfing and conversing. In the end, the team of Selby, Bartlett, Haplea and DeCicco(who had to leave after nine holes because he felt he couldn't match the shot he had on # 7 which he posted on Facebook) took honors with a 2 over par score. The team of Pete and Debbie Chick, Ted Gavozzi and Mike Yeager finished 4 over par and the team of Ferrelli, Murray and Mondora finished 5 over par. There was a fourth team but scores were not turned in to the scorekeeper thus their results are not official. We play by the rules and stand for the National Anthem.
Yours very truly,
Hap

10:30 a.m.        Thursday, October 15th     Boulder Creek  www.bouldercreekohio.com                                            Streetsboro                        Myron Mondora

On a nearly perfect golf day in Streetsboro, OH the threesome led by Captain Mark Rappoport '63 and teammates Jack Haplea '59 and Bill DeCicco '59 shot the temperature (67 degrees) and eked out a 2 stroke victory over the foursome of Dick Selby '49, Myron Mondora '59, Lloyd Murray '59 and Dave Brenner '63.

Brother Hap, dressed from head to toe in maroon and white, had the golf highlight the day, placing his tee shot on the course's signature hole (#17) within 3 feet of the cup. And yes, he sank the putt for a birdie 2.

At the 19th hole, which followed, discussion took place regarding tentative plans for 2016 events. At this point there is consensus to continue a two day event in mid-July, which will include the annual gathering, and to likely reduce the number of golf outings by perhaps 2 or 3 with all or most to occur in the greater Boardman area.

If anyone has an opinion about this or desires to offer suggestions please feel free to post on BHSClassmates.
Additional details, regarding next year's events will be provided sometime during the early spring of next year.

Report submitted by Bill DeCicco.

Alan Murray (BHS 59) has an affiliation with "My Loop Card" which offers discounts for the three golf courses we will play in the Boardman area (Reserve Run, Salem Hills and the Links at Firestone Farms).  For additional information contact Alan at amurray@myloopcard.com and also check out the website:  www.myloopcard.com.  The Loop Card, if purchased can be used at some 20 "local" golf courses during the entire 2015 season.

We were able to get the senior rate of $30.

First Place -- Team of Don Bartlett (Captain), Jack Haplea and Lloyd Murray -- 66 (6 under par)
Commentary -- To win future BHS golf events, it is strongly advised that you arrange to have Black Bart as captain of your team. Lloyd also made a major contribution for the win but Brother Hap (wearing Irish green by the way) seemed distracted constantly mumbling "I can't believe the Browns beat the Stillers" and strategized (not on golf) but how to increase the value of his Brown's season tickets.

Second Place --Team of Ed Lughibhl (Honorary Captain), Ron Chick (65), Cliff Green and Bill Panick, (Chaney) -- 71 (1 under par)
Commentary -- scored the only eagle of the day, a 3 on hole #6 a long par five, Ron C. received the award for the worst attired and challenged the courses "on cart path only" rule. Cliff Green hit the flagstick on a par three and with a little luck would of had a hole in one and then required to purchase a round for all of his fellow classmates. Bill Panick (a friend of Ron's) is actually a Chaney grad as all are welcome to future BHS golf outings.

Third Place -- Team of Dick Selby (49), Honorary Captain), Pete Chick (61) and Bill DeCicco -- 77 (5 over par)
Commentary -- Pete dropped probably a 40 foot putt on #10 while Supt. Selby sank perhaps a 75 yard chip shot on #3 for a birdie. Here is the rest of that story. I know it is unusual but yours truly actually made a good chip shot to an elevated green where the flag (but not the hole) was visible. Pete also landed on the green as we thought also did Dick. However, when we approach the green, we thought Dick's shot might have rolled off the far edge into a slight ravine. After a 2 or 3 minutes search for his ball we gave up only to find Dick's Pinnacle 3 in the cup.

Scramble results and commentary by Bill DeCicco

Most golf outings will be preceded by a breakfast gathering and followed by a 19th hole.  Additional details will be provided by the respective hosts several days prior to each event.
